This movie is pretty bad ass. It has some very clever points of view on a cliche genre making it a unique breath of fresh air. Intense action and awesome effects, the arc of the anti-hero to true hero is a tremendous ride.
Combine The Goonies with the London riots and an alien invasion and you're in the ballpark.
