Review of Attack the Block (2011) by Cm K — 05 Apr 2012
"Attack the Block" is a fun, engrossing film that actually has something to say: a sci-fi horror social commentary comedy. Within the alien-invasion genre framework, the story is pretty original.
The creature design is surpirisingly simple, effective, and original as well, which sums up the experience nicely. The situational, pot, and tongue-in-cheek humor is played up just enough so you sense it's intentional, but never over-the-top.
An example is a shot of a kid on a moped dramatically riding into the mist confronting the aliens with Samurai sword held out all majestic like. An intelligently written script spoken in mostly British Cockney-Jamacian street slang, you might want to watch with subtitles to get the full effect.
Definitely warrants future viewings if you're a horror, sci-fi, and/or Brit comedy fan.
