Review of Attack the Block (2011) by Adrian Z — 15 Jun 2012
Low budget indie take on alien invasion genre tries to overcome its limitations by giving reason for the aliens (which remind me of the artwork on the Space Invader cabinets) to focus their attacks on a gang of young delinquents holed up in a block.
The youthful cast, confidently led by John Boyega, is impressively energetic. The script handles the redemptive transition of the main characters from hoodlums to something more akin to heroes well enough, however finding a connection to these characters can take a large part of the movie.
I felt the satirical edge could have been sharper as well. Additionally, confining most of the film's duration to narrow corridors and small apartments, and the stylish, yet ultimately unconvincing special effects, leave me with the feeling that the general press may have overrated this somewhat.
I'm afraid the producers of Shaun Of The Dead have yet to produce something that beats Shaun Of The Dead,.
