Review of Attack the Block (2011) by Joseph S — 22 Feb 2014
Best film of the summer, and one of the best of the year. You will enjoy it so much the first time, you might not realize how clever it all is, but its damn clever, and I already look forward to watching it again and again.
"Super-8" was nostalgia run amok over bland action sequences and blander melodrama, Attack The Block is fun, funny, exciting, visually vibrant, and complex without becoming preachy or sentimental.
Recalls 'Critters 3", "The Warriors", "The Horde", with monsters like a sleaker neon dipped variation of the Ape-Spirits from "Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives".
Food for the thought the boys attack two girls in the opening scenes, the consequences of which play out through the rest of the film, which "confronts the alien", on a number of different levels, which only in the last moments and re-entry into the real world, really take effect.
There is wit here and there is style and no sacrifice of entertainment value or intelligence. "This is about big ape wolf motherfuckers from outer space. Not about gangs, or rap music, or violence in video games.
