Review of Attack the Block (2011) by Horror Movie H — 09 Sep 2012

Fury Monster Werewolf Gorilla Aliens is the name given to the fury fierce monsters that drop from outer space in this si-fi, adrenaline comedy produced by the minds of Shaun of the Dead. I expected good from this, and it delivered. Attack The Block is about a group of hoodlumâ(TM)s  who stumble across a hideous creature that fell from the sky. They hunt it down and kill it to later find out that killing it attracted loads more which are on the hunt to kill the delinquencies. From start to finish is Literally action packed to the fullest. The film is a total adrenaline rush and makes you want more. Within the first 15 minutes I was at the edge of my seat. I didnâ(TM)t expect anything less if the Shaun of the Dead producers where involved as it was a major box-office hit. What made Shaun of the Dead so unique was that it balanced the scares and laughs to make an all-out entertaining watch. Attack The Block is exactly that! Whilst being able to throw surprise scares the will was able to present comedy without over-powering the horror. The laughs were laughs and not chuckles, but the scares where jumps and not screams. The film isnâ(TM)t a horror so I didnâ(TM)t expect an all-out fear-fest, but, for a si-fi thriller, it tried. Monster alien flicks have died out, they are lost within ghosts and torture but, Attack the Block proves that creature features can still be scary, thrilling and entertaining⦠all at the one time. The characters are the perfect victims. Those who attack others soon become the attacked. The whole chav sum bag look really makes you wish they would die, but as the film progresses the characters soon grow on us and then they become likable. The comedy is gold, the jokes are fresh and typical teenage gangster. The quotes are funny and there constant references to the monsters are classic. Believe Bruv. The films strong point is that it could suit anybodyâ(TM)s taste. You donâ(TM)t have to like a certain genre to like this film. It would be more for the male audience with its Xbox, fifa references and its intense action packed scenes. But, the female audience would find this a joy to watch. The film manages to capture the teenage attitude and use it to its advantage. its the overall reactions and actions of them which makes the film. This is a must see!

VERDICT: Coming from a first time director is could have been dull, but having the Shaun of the Dead producer made it what it is. This film is a total adrenaline rush which delivers scares, thrills, comedy and entertainment all rolled into one. They called it Attack the Block. GRADE: [B+]. SCORE: 75/100.
