Review of Attack the Block (2011) by Elisabeth B — 13 Nov 2012
Not everyday you encounter a film that's set around a council estate and is attacked by aliens and that's what's great about it: it's fresh, new and different. I think the characters were a little stereotyped and over the top (and believe me, I've encounter some and no where near THAT bad) but the young cast were energetic and brilliant, taking every moment on screen as their own.
Slickly directed by Joe (Adam and Joe) Cornish, this is a funny black comedy, tongue in cheek science fiction horror, though more funny than scary. The set pieces were simple but very effect and the bad foul language making you somewhat proud to be British.
It is the cast that lifts the film and does extremely well on a basic script. A wonderful, simple idea that's never been done before and us Brits rarely do science fiction, so it was great to watch.
Just a shame it was fairly short and did seem to run out of ideas halfway through the film but it does end with a smile on your face. To put it simply, it's Chav's vs. Aliens but that's what's great about it.
Worth a watch and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. A dark, funny British Sci-fi flick. Respect Blood.
