Review of Attack the Block (2011) by James W — 06 Sep 2013
It never takes itself seriously but Attack the Block is still rubbish. The mix of science fiction with comedy never finds a balance, there are whole scenes where nothing is remotely funny, not even Nick Frost's stoner earns the odd chuckle.
I understand the fact it's not a huge budget movie, but even so the Alien itself is laughably bad and when it jumps out on the characters guaranteed you won't react with a shock as the attacks are so predictable.
Jodie Whittaker is the only reason why I'd watch this again, she's pure British talent and does well with her lines and driving her character, but the youth cast are another thing. Moses, Pest, Biggz, Jerome and Dennis are the most annoying leads, literally chatting crap with nothing relevant to what happens in the film.
I think the only type of movie these characters are worthy in are movies such as Harry Brown where youth are the enemy and have a key part to the narrative, but these kids in this movie are just disposable and when they fall victim to the alien creatures it's a mercy as the headache you gain from watching this drivel will disappear.
