Review of Atrocious (2010) by Jeffrey H — 30 Jan 2012
The last fifteen minutes of this film contained several mild chills, liberally spaced apart, with a plot revelation / twist in about the last four or five minutes. Unfortunately, it's a seventy-three minute long film.
It doesn't really add much to the found footage horror genre, which is a shame, because the actors are pretty good, the setting is not bad, and they have a decent basic idea for a twist at the end.
Films like Paranormal and Cloverfield give those that are receptive at all to the found footage genre some interesting things to look at and think about throughout the film - you don't sit around for the entire movie waiting for one big payoff / scare at the end.
If you are going to spend 80% of the movie in pure setup mode, the last 20% had better be classic. Instead, with Atrocious, the bulk of that 20% we spend getting jounced around in the dark, unable to see squat, much less anything really atrocious.
There are a lot of plot inconsistencies with this one as well - the plot twist is a twist, alright, but it doesn't make a lot of sense.
