Review of Atonement (2007) by Dann M — 10 Feb 2012
Atonement is a controversial film that you either go with, or don't. There's a fine line between a good twist ending and a WTF ending that sours a film. One of the themes of this film is perspective, and it plays with this theme through the use of different character points of views.
The ending takes this theme one step further, but does so unsuccessfully. The lead actors, Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, give excellent performances and have a good onscreen chemistry. This is, in part, why the twist doesn't work; as it does a disservice to the compelling character drama that Knightley and McAvoy are delivering.
Atonement has a lot of things working for it, but they don't come together in a cohesive way and are subverted in the final act.
