Review of Atonement (2007) by Gavin S — 31 Jul 2012
Great performances from McAvoy, Ronan, Knightley and Redgrave; fantastically moving cinematography, a believable romance to root for, an honest depiction of war and it's casualties, and yet...it doesn't add up to what it could have been.
I found the first part of this movie dragged on and on and could have been accomplished in half the time. It also seemed quite obvious from the beginning what was happening, so I don't know why the director felt the need to take so long on the parts we already figured out.
Still, a good movie when it focuses on the war & romance (so most of the 2nd half). Not really a Best Picture Nominee, (especially when those NOT nomiated include: Eastern Promises, Assassination of Jesse James, Gone Baby Gone, Into the Wild, I'm Not There, & American Gangster) but still a good movie, though definitely a downer.
