Review of Atonement (2007) by Mike C — 02 Dec 2014
Nominated for seven Oscars back around 2007. I didn't fully appreciate what I was seeing. Just remembered the green dress and became an Ian McEwan fan and bought it a while back. Finally re-watched. I can appreciate it a little more.
It's about regret. McEwan has mastered that topic...how one decision can alter lives forever. That's what this movie is about. A young girl, maybe a little scorned and jealous, definitely naive, makes a decision that impacts many lives.
McAvoy is always brilliant. He has to be one of the finest actors in the world. This was likely my introduction to him back in the day but I've seen him several times since. Knightley is always pretty solid. Maybe a little above average in this.
With McEwan, it's all in the story. No spoilers here but even having seen the movie some years ago, I'd forgot about the twist. And it's brutal. And that's why he's a great story teller and why this was an Oscar-nominee for Best Picture.
Original: Above average, but pushed to hard for that epic quality. Plus they billed it as an epic, which really isn't for them to decide. With so many nominations, further proof that movies sucked last year.
