Review of Atonement (2007) by Matt G — 28 Jul 2015
Certainly gorgeous to behold, featuring sumptuous cinematography, a one-of-a-kind score, and vibrant period settings. The performances are also striking, but it is Ronan who steals it, and Redgrave who leaves a lingering impression in her one scene.
Unfortunately, as striking as the set-up is, and that first hour is indeed wonderful stuff, the central doomed romance is too undernourished for the tragedy to have any lasting impact. Because of this, Atonement is a technical marvel, but the heart and soul is robbed a bit.
