Review of Atonement (1971) by Kevin D — 03 Jan 2012
As the aphorism goes, what works on the page doesn't always work on the screen, and though the strengths of McEwan's writing shine through, this doesn't seem the best possible adaptation. Not to carp or anything. McAvoy is good, as are Ronan, Garai, and Redgrave as Briony. Wright has improved by leaps and bounds over the moribund and melodramatic "Pride and Prejudice"; I don't think he employed that film's seriously overused blue filter even once, and bravo. Knightley was also better than expected.
The shot of Cecilia floating in the Jesus Christ pose was a gigantic head-smacker, though.
