Review of Atonement (1971) by Richard C — 16 Nov 2012
Unbearably moving and superb all the way throughout, Atonement plays out as not just one of the best films from the last 25 years, but by far the best British film of this decade thus far and one that will remain a treasure for decades to come.
Led by Keira Knightley and James McAvoy's best performances to date, the film also features an admirable and inspiring direction from Joe Wright including a tracking shot set in Dunkirk that is easily one of the all-time greatest shots in cinema and an example of hypnotic filmmaking.
A brilliant period drama, a touching love story and a cracking war film, this hybrid of war and period films is the sort of film that needs to be seen to be believed.
