Review of Atomic Blonde (2017) by Jon C — 17 Aug 2017
It's not just massively style over substance it's repetitive, derivative style over a complete absence of any substance what-so-ever.
We have become so accepting of terrible films at this point its upsetting. People accept this, empty, hollow, tedious experience as a moderately good action film with YAY! a female lead! Listen, Cynthia Rothrock was a female lead in action movies in the 80s and 90s and even her films had plot, characters and a point. Ok she didn't have millions to make her films look like vodka commercials but I would watch any of those over this pile of soulless dross.
How do you make a film set in East Berlin in 1989 about a 6ft, blonde, lesbian, spy, assassin played by Charlize Theron boring?!? How do you do that?!? Madness!!
The less said about James "budget Tyler Durden" McAvoy the better. I am not sure there's been a more punchably annoying character on screen since almost every character in the Fifth Element!
The plot is full of massive holes and characters that state stuff at the beginning of the film then seem surprised later in the film by a thing that they seemed to already know previously...
No one had any character, back story, emotions, arcs or even, in the case of Theron, facial expressions.
There was one semi-decent fight scene which was derivative and ripped off Hardcore Henry and the Raid.
None of the "look how hip my ipod playlist" soundtrack fit well with the action on screen.
The dialogue was like the dialogue you would hear in bad video clips in computer games like Hitman or GTA.
Great actors were utterly wasted.
It was too long, nothing really happened and I was bored 20mins in.
That ANYONE, let alone professional critics, thought this was good is an absolute, complete and total mystery to me.
It's very very sad when badly written, badly acted, badly shot crap like Baby Driver and Atomic Blonde become the norm for what people think is a GOOD movie. We are all doomed.
