Review of Atomic Blonde (2017) by Phil N — 20 Dec 2017
Atomic Blonde is a movie that relishes in how cool it is, and we can't help but shake our head and smile.
It's a movie that works better as a collection of scenes, stumbling a bit in telling a cohesive story. The spy-espionage plot is convoluted, leading to some of the twists in the end not quite holding the weight it should. Most of the action sequences never reach the level of bad-assery as those in either John Wick film, but the staircase scene is pretty brilliant.
Theron overcomes a shaky accent and oozes coolness as the ass-kicking, vodka-chugging protagonist. Though it's like by design we're left to know little about her character and why she does much of what she does, it still makes the viewing experience a bit shallow in the end.
Still the film is beautifully shot, the actors are clearly having fun with the characters, and it's a solid, if unspectacular entry in David Leitch's budding filmography.
