Review of Atomic Blonde (2017) by Dawdlingpoet — 27 Nov 2021
This is a stylish and colourful (both in language and in terms of the bright, often neon, artificial lighting used) action thriller film, with plenty of action/chase scenes, car chases, gunfights and the like.
It has a slick feel to it, with some mildly unsettling, dark and somber sounding music played in the background to keep the viewer feeling tense and unsure as the plot continues to develop. The main character is quite mysterious and I enjoyed learning more about her and the situations she finds herself in.
The cast is also good, with Charlize Theron playing said main character and James MacAvoy, John Goodman and even Toby Jones also present as additional cast members. This film is a little unclear in terms of some plot details and it features quite a lot of violence and fight scenes, there's more of that than particularly clear plot line so its more a film you watch to get your mind off things, to watch for the visual effects, the CGI and so on.
I also quite liked the soundtrack/musical score, with numerous tracks from the time its set in as well (the late 80s, as the Berlin Wall was brought down). I suppose there isn't a great deal to this film on one level but I found it an easy and enjoyable watch regardless.
I'd recommend this generally as a basic stylish action film but if your looking for a film that is multi layered and really thought provoking then you should probably look elsewhere.
