Review of Atomic Blonde (2017) by Craig V — 26 Aug 2017
Cold War spy thriller starring Charlize Theron as an attractive American agent working for British spy agency MI6.
Theron plays Lorraine Broughton sent to 1989 Berlin as the wall that splits the city in two is coming down.
The operation is basically to aid Berlin section chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to recover a list of agents from dubious hands. Very Mission Impossible (1996).
The film has some very good action sequences that are very graphic in terms of martial arts like combat requiring Broughton to have an ice bath to soothe her wounds!
I was entertained by Theron's performance but the screenplay was very unoriginal. As I have already alluded to the agents list was very Mission Impossible in the nineties and at times I felt this was an audition for director David Leitch and Theron to launch a Jane Bond franchise!
The fall of the Berlin wall and indeed East Germany is an interesting modern history lesson that adds something to the moribund plotline of espionage done many a time before.
