Review of Atomic Blonde (2017) by Cath O — 16 Aug 2017
Visceral, violent and stylish. Charlize Theron is MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton, sent to Berlin as the wall is about to come down to find some McGuffin or other. Can she trust shifty James McAvoy? Flirty Sofia Boutella? The movie is all neon and monochrome, chic and shabby, beauty and ugliness.
Theron has charisma and presence to spare and really sells the amazing action scenes, while the dynamic shooting style, making you feel like you are in the middle of the fights and car chases, is thrilling.
Not quite as solid is a rather muddled script and one or two too many plot twists. McAvoy is sleazily engaging and Lorraine's romantic liaison with Boutella is more than just male gaze pandering. Super stylish and with a kicking 80s soundtrack, this is a thrilling action film anchored by another great badass performance by Charlize Theron.
