They're striving for realism; an "it could happen to you" kind of thing which only works when things make sense. It starts well and is shot with skill but as the movie progresses it gets harder and harder to follow along with the characters' stupidity and the film's questionable logic.
The ending in particular is flat, uninspired and very disappointing.
