Review of Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011) by Dave B — 20 Mar 2012
The term "low-rent" keeps bobbing up in the reviews for this film. I'm sure the producers would love to have an "Avatar" budget to adapt Ayn Rand's book onto the silver screen but unfortunately there is no leftist-controlled Hollywood studio that would back a screenplay like this.
With only a $6.5 million budget I think they did a wonderful job stretching every penny to make this an enjoyable film. Of course, this film was not created for the sole purpose of entertainment but to promote an idea.
An idea that is not seen in the vast majority of movies whether they be blockbusters or Indie films. The libertarian idealism which Ayn Rand professed throughout her life was aptly portrayed in this "low-rent" production.
Sure, "Pulp Fiction" was made for only $8 million in 1994 but when the highest paid actors in Hollywood work for peanuts it's much easier to come in under budget. This film, without any A-list actors, represents the ideals of a large and ever-growing segment of Americans who are sick and tired of the special-interest controlled, parental, big-brother type government which is steadily encroaching into our daily lives.
Watch it with an open mind and I promise you that you won't regret seeing it.
