Review of Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011) by Lenny Y — 26 Apr 2011
This was a great film - very much enjoyable and relevant to today's socio-political climate. The relative obscurity of the actors made the movie even more impactful - any big Hollywood names would have taken away from the story and the character. In this film you believe that actor is the character.., Casting was outstanding by the way - Dagny Taggart, Hank Rearden and Ellis Wyatt were all perfect (and I reference them by character names, because that's who they appear to be).
If one is a fan of Ayn Rand, they'll enjoy it. If one doesn't know of Ayn rand, they'll enjoy it. But if you know of Ayn Rand and hate her, then you probably haven't read the book, haven't seen the film and are too full of hate to stay off the comments and give it a 0. I bet most negative reviews here are from people who didn't see the film but hate Ayn Rand and what she stood for.
Finally, this is one movie where Critic reviews should be avoided as they are meaningless. Asking professional critics to opine on a film like this is like asking vegan PETA member to rate a steakhouse. It's just against their nature - they can't help it but as liberal arts majors, members of writers' union and Hollywood supporters they can't be objective here.
At one time, anyone who was a communist was blacklisted in America. Now anyone who is a conservative or libertarian is blacklisted in Hollywood. So no big-name actors or critics would risk Hollywood fury by standing-by this film.
