Review of Atari: Game Over (2014) by Ian G — 28 Dec 2015
I didn't hear much of this story until the pending release of the documentary itself, although the concept is very interesting as one of the two greatest urban legends in regards to what sank the initial video game giant Atari (the other prominent theory was a lot of the brands that featured prominently in Blade Runner suffered hugely after the films release).
Zak Penn does go into the business aspects of Atari and its build into being the gaming giant, but the main thrust is focusing on the game designer and his legendary status within the community with the titles he had designed up to ET, the burial itself of the tons of games, and the rediscovery of them in said lot when they were undug a few years back to much fan fare of the gamming community, some of whom migrated to the site to see it take place.
Decent for what it is but would have been cool to have a little more coda or tension to the story, and also have more interviews with the competition that were inspired by Atari whether it have been Sega, Nintendo or whomever.
Also didnt really go into the collection aspect much of the games found at the site to the secondary and collectors market.
