Review of Astro Boy (2009) by Mark P — 27 Jun 2010
A bit of a mixed bag this one an update of a 60s Anime given a CG sheen its little more than another in a long line of Western attempts to assimilate Eastern traditions and art forms for its own ends. Its also difficult to work out who this is really aimed at, the young protagonist, GG and Pinocchio influences lands this squarely in the kids camp but the underlying political subtext and post 9/11 paranoia are strictly adults only.
While Pixar have become so good at appealing to both adults and children Astro Boy is wide of the mark, the comedy sits awkwardly against the more serious subject matter that powers the plot.
