Review of Astro Boy (2009) by Dc E — 07 Feb 2012
"Astro Boy" 10 Scale Rating: 6.0 (Above Average) ...
Universally panned by critics and moviegoers alike, "Astro Boy" wasn't bad. Considering the source material it should have been a lot better, but the harsh criticism is a little unfair.
When a lab accident causes his only son to die, a scientist (Nicolas Cage) decides to create a robotic version of him. After deciding that the robotic boy will never really be his son, the scientist rejects him leaving him to fend for himself ... all the while the military is chasing him so that they can turn him into a weapon.
To be honest, it started with a LOT of potential and you feel like you're watching a four star movie. Sadly, it fizzles and becomes somewhat cliche. Not a bad movie at all, just not anything to write home about.
A lot of people complained about the animation, but I personally enjoyed the simplicity. For me, there is still great animation out there without looking like Toy Story. Ultimately, it was a solid little movie that does nothing to revolutionize the genre.
A warning to parents: this is not really a kids movie. The themes discussed and shown in the film are dark in nature and, depending on what you let your child watch, may not be appropriate.
