Review of Astro Boy (2009) by Bob K — 22 Jul 2010
There are many elements that are just not geared for kids watching a kids movie...no matter how funny you think you make them. They tried to change too much of the original Asto Boy series, & they didn't do a very good job...but you can see how hard they tried to make it their own.
Dr. Tenm was too irrational & bounced around like a super ball. President Stone was way too stereotypical...it made my brain hurt how they kept pushing this republican vibe out of every word that he said. Dr. Elefun tried to be the voice of reason & all wise about life & such, but he barely says anything & was kind of a push over. Also, can someone say 'over kill'? Getting Samuel L. Jackson to voice ZOG, the robot who had maybe six lines! WTF?! Also, what's with all the comic relief...I know it's a kids movie, but be a little more creative. Mr. Squeegee & Mr. Squirt were fine, they actually added a little. But the RRF was there just to be stupid for no reason...the first time they're introduced, they're serious but silly, every time after that, they just lost what little seriousness they had & were just bollox. The ending, & not the battle or the whole warm hearted part either, the very end...where the giant one-eyed tentacle alien comes. Yeah, that part...WTF?! Why couldn't they just end it with the nice warm feeling they were aiming for? Had to go ruin a moment for no apparent reason, ya know?
