Review of Astro Boy (2009) by Troy F — 26 Feb 2011
For a character as cool as Astro Boy, I'd expect a film based on his character to be cool, fun and action packed. But that's not exactly what he got. Astro Boy's story and concept is disappointing and too familiar and predictable.
Really, based on the story and events that you see occur in this film, the script sounds like a rush job that resulted from the writer's strike, in a matter of fact I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason why the script was so weak.
There really isn't any characters to identify with either cause their types are too familiar from those you've met many times before or just devoid of anything interesting. And for a kids film, it was surprisingly low key on comedy or anything that funny.
And the action is just... okay. I suppose if you don't mind something that is recycled from familiar elements, Astro Boy may be watchable. But for people like me, that have seen many kids films and the kind of stories, morals, and characters that are included in them, and yet expecting something new from Astro Boy, it's hard not to be disappointed.
I won't deny it was watchable at most, so while unoriginal it doesn't border as anything terrible, just poor.
