Review of Astro Boy (2009) by Shane D — 23 Oct 2011

I might be showing my age, but I remember being a kid and waking up at 5am just to watch Astro Boy. That was a long, long time ago. Upon hearing of this remake I had the slightest bit of nostalgic interest, just the slightest but after sitting through I think whatever ounce of nostalgia I had left was gone.

I mean, its not a terrible effort, but unlike the best animations out there, this was ONLY for the kids. Where it showed promise to touch on some deep emotional undercurrents of the central characters father-son issues, his Pinocchio-real boy problems, it seemed as if these moments were glossed over all too quickly.

Which was a shame, because all that's left is a standard pre-teen romp that will surely be forgotten very soon.
