Got a little confused on the first viewing as I initially thought the framing device intruded on the story about the people IN Asteroid City, but on rewatch it hit me that the framing device of the Play IS the core of the story and I found it to be actually really cool.
Also the alien and roadrunners were certified Funny Little Guys™.
