Review of Asteroid City (2023) by Jluis_001 — 16 Jun 2023
Wes Anderson sure knows how to put together a cast, but his stories have started to falter. The French Dispatch frankly left no impression on me and even though that process is repeated with Asteroid City, I have to admit that I had more fun with this one. The humor may not be sharp but it's still ingenious and Anderson's characters manage an excellent chemistry because the actors are clearly not being pressured into getting into them but rather getting to embody them so that they work within the context as is often the case with the director's stories.
Anderson movies do not show bizarre worlds by any means, but their identity evidently feels like a different reality. But as with everything, the sins of performance often show up and once again Anderson hits the same wall.
There's no depth in his plot at all. Neither argumentative nor emotional. His formula becomes evident one more time and reflects the repetitive process in which the director is stuck.
And the easy answer is to say that if you are an Anderson ''fan'' you can't find it boring or bad, but so that means that you can't demand anything from him anymore? Is he so entrenched in a method that he can't get out of it? If so, I think Wes Anderson should rethink his career.
I'll make it clear. I liked this movie. But I'm not going to applaud Anderson's same gimmick over and over again.
