Review of Assimilate (2019) by Netlord80 — 26 Jan 2020
I watched this movie with the hopes that it would be halfway decent. The majority of what I find on Netflix these days is garbage. I was completely turned off when I saw that this was nothing but a bad remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. That film even has some good remakes, this unfortunately is not one of them. Half of the premise made no sense, they explained way too much, and the acting was only passable.
Many times it felt like the directors assumed that the audience couldn't follow along, so they had to explain or show absolutely everything. The characters kept making really dumb decisions throughout the film. We're the only people in town, let's stop for the stop sign. That makes sense. There was also very little emotional weight at any point. One of the main kids watches his mother die right in front of him and aside from a moment right afterwards, it has no further impact on him, it has no lasting impact on him at all. In another scene, a character sees the dead body of her mother and she reacts as though she was upset about some punishment. I'm not sure that it would be fair to blame the actors for the bad performances in this film. A lot of it almost certainly comes down to the writing and directing. To this end, they used the same are they real gimmick at least six different times. And you could drive a Mack truck through some of the plot holes in this thing.
I wouldn't waste your time on this turkey. This doesn't fit in to the "so bad it's good" category either. This film is simply bad.
