Review of Assault on Wall Street (2013) by Kurt B — 15 May 2013
Best action movie of the year! Uwe Boll has really grown as a director and it shows prominently here. Seriously, Iron Man 3 has nothing on this. The movie, by its very nature, is charged with topical political themes, but they're incredibly accessible.
Never once do they feel pretentious or forced. Dominic Purcell (Lincoln Burrows from prison break!) is great as the main character Jim, and so is Rosie, his wife played by Erin Karpluk. A key theme of the film is that because of corrupt business practices on Wall Street, hardship is everywhere.
Consequently, the first half of the movie is completely heartbreaking. If you've ever had a hard time making ends meet, or if you know some who's fallen seriously ill, you'll instantly sympathize with this couple's struggle.
Through Jim and Rosie, the audience feels not just the struggle of one couple, but of everyone, maybe even themselves. For added measure, there are montages with some beautiful cinematography in them that really capture the hidden, poignant side of New York City.
By the time the film shifts gears into action mode (which happens because of a totally shocking twist that I won't spoil here), you're totally on Jim's side. The action scenes where he pushes back against the corrupt bankers are riveting and build to a climax that is absolutely insane.
By the end you'll be practically begging for a sequel.
