Review of Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) by Hunter I — 11 Oct 2008
Ok, this is an interesting movie to review. There are basically 2 aspects of this to look at. As far as the actual "assault" goes, the movie does a very strong, if formulaic, job of building tension and showcasing some fairly exciting action scenes.
As for the rest of the movie (the unnecessary subplots, the thinly developed character arcs, etc.), this flick fairly mediocre, sometimes bad. But since the main plot is why you wanted to rent the movie in the first place, it actually is surprisingly well done b-movie magic.
Plus, Laurence Fishburne is wonderfully cool throughout...countering the fact that Hawke's and Leguizamo's characters are mostly annoying. One other thing to note, this movie is distractingly violent at parts.
..but maybe that's part of what gave the flick the extra "umph" it needed to rise above the traditional PG-13 thriller formula that makes its ways into so many movies these days.
