Review of Assassin's Creed (2016) by James R — 15 May 2017
Damn what a shame. The world still hasn't experienced a "good" movie based on a video game. Assassin's Creed exists in the same universe as the popular video game franchise of the same name, but doesn't use much of anything from the video games to tell it's own original story.
In the film we follow Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) a troubled man that is taken in by a company called Abstergo. Led by a lady named Sofia (Marion Cotillard) Callum learns that through a machine called the animus he can access memories of his ancestor Aguilar who was a member of the Assassin's a group of men and women dedicated to protecting an artifact called the Apple of Eden.
The Assassin's are in an ongoing war with the Templars who want the Apple for their own nefarious plans. Sofia needs Callum to access the memories, so that they can find out where the Apple of Eden is located.
Callum soon learns there's much more to Abstergo then meets the eye. Ok so right off the bat the movie is still very pretty. Cinematography is well done and it makes some pretty cool Easter Egg references to the games.
Speaking of the games I think it would take a lot to convince non fans of the game that this is enjoyable. It leaves out quite a few plot holes and the story itself (much like the game) is very convolute.
The plot is so light too its ridiculous. We only get three scenes inside the animus. The action is great, but the fact that we only get glimpses of Aguilar and only parts of memories gives us no reason to really care what happens to the Assassins.
Not saying there's much character development for the real world sequences. We get one flash back about Callum's past and then suddenly its 30 years later and we just go with the whole Animus thing.
Overall, this movie's not as bad as some critics are saying, but it certainly isn't good. Only fans of the video games will even want to remotely think about renting this one!
