Review of Assassins (1995) by Aurelius D — 25 Jun 2009
It's amazing I haven't reviewed this yet as this is one of my favorite flicks. It was on right after I finished Cop Land and I was like wow, total Sly night. All I had to do was put on Specialist and I felt satisfied.
So you got Sly who proves he's still a good guy just in interesting circumstances right from the get go. You see him in a swamp with a mark. From there on he's just wanting to get out, maybe coach a woman's soccer team or perhaps sell insurance door to door whatever those quiet guys do. He gets called in on a hit even though he was going to color it quits and that's when he runs into the new swinging....gun, in town. Antonio upstages him and proves to have the exuberance that youth and inexperience instill in over eager individuals out to make a name. Next comes a game of cat and mouse/ chess where it can be hard to know who to cheer for. Stallone is obviously the protagonist but there is the way that Antonio tries to emulate him while displaying his own flash that makes it fun. Throw in some sexy gun fights and one of my favorite subjects, contract killing, and you got yourselves a good time. Anyone who is a fan of either leading actor can't miss it, I honestly thought Julianne Moore's character wasn't really that vital. Sure she played a role but a squash would have been more amusing to watch. All in all this is a must see if you want a solid action flick with a couple twists. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, it just knows what works and uses it in its best interest.
