Review of Ask Me Anything (2014) by Hannah G — 24 Apr 2015
What could be a powerful movie about taking ownership of one's sexuality instead turned into a silly warning about the issues only people who are scared of the internet are worried about. There's a disturbing lack of powerful females, instead all rely on their husbands/boyfriends for character.
The one somewhat-empowered female is criminalized for wanting to return to work while her baby suffers from night terrors. Instead, the voice of wisdom in this movie is a convicted rapist (made even worse by the fact that he's giving advice to a victim of sexual abuse).
In the end, the movie abandons all these threads of sexuality and abuse and instead decides to send a message about the danger of sharing information on the internet. This is a movie that completely misunderstands not only the character of young women but the role of internet in society as a whole.
This movie seems so behind the times and off the mark that it's like watching an 80 year old man explain my life to me.
