Review of As I Lay Dying (2013) by Brad L — 12 Nov 2013
About the only thing more challenging that reading Faulkner is putting his stories on screen, hence the paucity of Faulkner's work that has ever found its way into the theater. In a career that has shown him wiling to take on just about any challenge, James Franco tackles this project aggressively and succeeds in telling a deep and abiding story penned by America's foremost literary giant.
There are some minor incongruities that were bothersome to me as a fan of Faulkner's fiction that probably wouldn't bother a more detached viewer. That said, this is a challenging movie and if you are looking for a movie that doesn't require thinking or close observance, head to the multiplex.
But if you are willing to invest yourself in this dense tale of tragedy, you will be rewarded. This is an effort that truly and completely shows what film can be.
