Review of As Good as It Gets (1997) by Dukejon — 07 Mar 2018
A very touching tale about a misanthropic man who has his heart warmed by a plucky waitress and a little dog. Great performances from Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt (you can tell why they both won an oscar for best actor) and also a fantastic supporting cast.
However there are a couple of very dated aspects about this film that you wouldn't see in a remake; Jack Nicholson's homophobic jokes and the huge age difference between him and the female lead. It took me back to a happier time where people weren't always glued to their smartphones, if your doctor told you to lose weight you'd go on a diet (rather than sue him for "fat-shaming"), Islamic terrorism still wasn't a thing and there were only two genders.
