Review of As Good as It Gets (1997) by Milos M — 26 Jul 2010
The ending is imperfect, but As Good as It Gets is so funny, so heartfelt, and so wonderful, that it really is a great film. Jack Nicholson is funny and perfect as Melvin Udall, a homophobic, racist, uptight novelist who hates just about everyone.
We also have great supporting work from Greg Kinnear, Helen Hunt, and Cuba Gooding, Jr. As Good as It Gets is basically a drama, but it works so well as a comedy. There's lots of razor-sharp dialogue, funny situations, and mean-spirited stuff.
The story here, is very well-written and inventive, until the end. Although, the ending is a compromise, the film is a marvel throughout. Terrific. Funny. Heartfelt. Razor-Sharp. I really liked As Good as It Gets.
And it really is as good as it gets. LOL.
