Review of As Good as It Gets (1997) by Adrian B — 11 Feb 2013
First hour very enjoyable. Melvin Udall is a great character and it's fascinating to see him collide with people that are unfortunate enough to cross his path, such as the waitress. Great acting.
During the second half of the film the story becomes a bit contrived. I didn't understand what the car ride to Baltimore was all about. Sure, characters need to develop, and they as prescribed by Hollywood scriptwriter handbooks. But not to the extend that a warm relationship develops between two people who are so unsimilar as Melvin and Carol. It seems like the producer of the film demanded a happy ending.
