Review of As Good as It Gets (1997) by Otageemeur L — 28 Dec 2013
"As Good As It Gets" is a dramedy about Melvin (played by Jack Nicholson), a man that is very unpleasant with everyone, especially with his neighbor Simon (played by Greg Kinnear_, a gay painter living with his dog. Melvin is actually a romance novelist who always imagined the perfect scenes, far from his own self in life... Also, Melvin is afraid of any germ and has very peculiar customs. One day, Melvin will go to his favorite restaurant and will fall in love with Carol (played by Helen Hunt) and will discover that she has a very sick son. Melvin will try to do good and help Carol's son to get a better treatment. At the same time, Simon is attacked by burglars and will be scarred, which will make him lose all his friends and his fame. Melvin will have to take care of Simon's dog and will eventually help Simon.
The story of the movie is simple but has a certain appeal especially due to Jack Nicholson's character trying to change who he is for the better good. Also, Carol is the only one who see behind the covers of Melvin's, making him a better man. The movie is good in general, it doesn't have such a special story but here, everything is about the characters, and that is well done.
