Review of As Good as It Gets (1997) by Caleb M — 15 Sep 2009
Nicholson is wonderful and Kinnear is equally charming, and while I was watching it I really enjoyed it, but everytime I think about it I like this movie less and less. Partly because the film feels so meticulusly planned out to make you laugh or cry I just get the feeling a group of writers and producers sat down and planned out how to script it so as many people would watch it as possible.
Plus, the script makes Helen Hunt's character go back and forth between being warmhearted and kind to mean and unforgiving. I get the feeling ten minutes after the ending Melvin made a wisecrack in the bakery and she stormed out of there and back to her apartment, where he followed her and won her back and then she got angry.
... etc. etc. etc.
