Review of As Good as It Gets (1997) by David F — 16 Mar 2010
What is really just a simple road movie really takes off due to the strong cast, particularly Nicholson in one of his meatiest roles, that of obsessive-compulsive romance novelist Melvin Udall. If not the meanest or the craziest son of a bitch he's ever played, he's certainly the meanest and craziest son of a bitch he's ever played - rude, homophobic, insensitive - until he falls in with Hunt, a waitress with a very sick kid, and Kinnear, a gay artist recovering from a terrible assault.
Three character studies traveling in the same car could have been awful, but the writing and performances are so good, it turns out to be anything but. Nicholson and Hunt have great chemistry, and at several points Cuba Gooding Jr.
almost steals the show.
