Review of As Good as It Gets (1997) by Devon B — 21 May 2012
A really good romantic comedy, perhaps a little overrated, but extremely well-done. As Good As It Gets follows the lives of Melvin (Nicholson), an offensive and insensitive writer with OCD, Carol (Hunt), a waitress who struggles to take care of her ill son, and Simon (Kinnear), a gay artist who experiences a midlife crisis after his home gets broken into; the film follows these lives as they intertwine with each other.
The script and story are great, very heart-warming. The characters are wonderful also, but it's the performances that make this film. Both Nicholson and Helen Hunt won Oscars for their performances, and Greg Kinnear received a nomination for Best Supporting actor; I personally thought Kinnear's performance was brilliant.
He easily would have won the Oscar had it not been the year for Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting. Overall, this is a really good comedy film with a great script, good characters, solid direction, and Oscar caliber performances, I recommend this film! Nominated for 7 Academy Awards.
