The character Mr. Udal is brilliant, an OCD, germaphope with a general discontent for people. He is a horribly angry writer who writes about what he knows nothing, love. He is so stubborn and incapable of social confrontation that he shoes and scares off everyone he comes in contact with.

Hunt's character is so involved in the worrisome health of her son she cannot find someone with whom she can relate. Her role is also stunning, this movie is fueled by outstanding acting. Nicholson does an inconceivable job at playing a cold hearted impossible to get to grump.

The situations he is put in through out the film cause a complete change in his flawed psychi. Kinnear's character is a gay and sensitive artist who is thrown into Udal's life showing him true hurt, a common hurt.
