A mixture of Lara Croft, Indiana Jones, The Goonies and a found footage horror film, unfortunately the action/adventure elements work A LOT better than the horror elements do. I will give the film props for choosing the Paris Catacombs as its main location (an intriguing and creepy setting, perfect for a horror film.
If the catacombs are indeed a set, I would place it on the same level as the caves in The Goonies. To be honest it was hard for me to tell if they were a set or were real), and it is indeed very bizarre at times.
I do like the idea that the catacombs are actually a portal to Hell, it kind of makes sense to me. However, the scenes in Hell aren't really all that scary. At best, As Above So Below is thrilling, exciting, atmospheric, fun, bizarre, and creepy.
At worst, it's a bit dull at times and derivative. That said, I'd still recommend this film as long as you aren't looking for a good horror film, but for a good found footage action/adventure film.
