Review of As Above, So Below (2014) by Adam S — 17 Dec 2014
"As Above, So Below" is an.... OK movie, I guess. It wasn't terribly scary, though it had it's moments. It was unnecessarily filmed in the shaky cam format, and the story fluctuated between being gripping and falling into run-of-the-mill horror film tropes.
The story is one of a young academic with an interest in the mystical science of alchemy, who is hoping to find the philosopher's stone in the catacombs that weave their way underneath Paris. Along with a group of experts in the area, the team fight their way through a number of psychological and physical traps to try and find an answer.
The cast is mostly unknown, and features Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, Edwin Hodge and Francois Civil. The cast is definitely not all bad, although the acting is inconsistent throughout the film, depending on the scene, and certainly would never win any awards.
I think, between a plot that almost sounds like a rousing mix between the Mummy and Paranormal Activity and a very interesting setting, it's most disappointing that this film never reaches it's potential. The whole "members of the team get picked off one-by-one" idea has been done to beyond it's limit, and it has sort of become boring recently.
The director gave this film a good honest try, but it's come up as just an average film unfortunately.
