Review of As Above, So Below (2014) by Mike L — 02 Jan 2015
I am not sure how many found footage horror movies it would take for them to make before they get an entertaining one out. Filmmakers do expect a horror genre would be perfect in a found footage movie to have that shaky camera movements and a amateur cheap scares. The recent found footage of As Above, So Below is one of the worse horror films that fails to be entertaining.
The movie has those clichà (C) of characters that are desperately in a search for a philosophers stone in a isolated unexplored catacombs. Then, we have more characters that refuses to join the lead explorer but does end up joining regardless.
The plot does have a supernatural mystery feel about Scarlett (Perdita Weeks) a young scholar on a search for a stone that her father never discovered until he passed away. Scarlett recruits a group of explorers that would help her go deep beneath the catacombs which she will soon discover more secrets on what lays beneath. The plot does get a little far fetched and never fully explained by the time the movie reaches the third act. It tries to have a creepy scary tone but falls terribly under the constant shaky camera movement that is tedious than thrilling. The characters fall through many unexpected events being in a tight claustrophic crawl space, or being chased by mysterious figures through the caves. As the movie is unraveled and coming to an end it does raise more questions but is it worth caring for. Not really, As Above, So Below is boring, has amateur acting, and the scares are tiresome.
