Review of Arthur (2011) by Andy W — 08 Oct 2011
A better-than-you'd-expect film, in which Brand tries to portray a character, although not entirely unlike his old self. Brand IS funny, and there are some laugh out loud moments, but he's not an actor.
Any parts which require some gravitas, he's lost. Mirren brings the class, and Gerwig is a likable presence. The original Arthur was no classic, and this does improve on some of its original weak moments.
But its not a well-made film: The first 30 mins are too slapdash, and only some good writing maintains interest. Its fun, but don't expect too much from it.
