Review of Art School Confidential (2006) by Mai B — 09 Dec 2007
The more I think about this movie, the more I liked it. Instead of the realistic slice of life coming of age comedy it makes you think it is at the beginning (which had some pretty spot on observations), it is a fully realized satire of success and creativity.
At a certain point in the movie, I thought I had figured out the plot and thought to myself "Gosh, wouldn't it be great if it ended this way," knowing full well it couldn't possibly.
But it did end the way I wanted it to, and still managed to make it feel fresh and unexpected. John Malkovich nails it as a well meaning, but terrible college professor. He really plays against type (if Malkovich necessarily has a type).
In my opinion, he should have gotten a supporting actor oscar nomination. Plus, it has Nick Swardson and Ethan Suplee in it. Points off for the dong, though.
